A thangka is a complicated, composite three-dimensional object consisting of: a picture panel which is painted or embroidered, a textile mounting; and one or more of the following: a silk cover, leather corners, wooden dowels at the top and bottom and metal or wooden decorative knobs on the bottom dowel.
Our Group bought most of our Thangkas from a big Thangka shop which occupy 2 double storey shoplots. There are also a school teaching local and foreigner the art of painting Thangka. It is called Boudha Stupa Thanka Centre and it is located right circle (East) of Boudanath Stupa.

The price of a Thangkas depnd very much on the artists and also the quality of the Thangka. Below is a picture showing a expert Tibeten artist painting a Mandala Thangka. It will take him 2 months to complete one. The price of this piece of art could be easily USD2k and above.
This shop is a family operated business and the boss is a young man who is very friendly and showing us his showroom upstair. The pricing at this shop is reasonable and negotiable.
The paint used for painting Thangka are not normal paint but the paint obtain from the mountain in the form of rocks and turn into paints.
The thangkas are really nice and it takes so much effort to complete it. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteJon: Yes, this Thangkas are nice. It is so much cheaper at Nepal. There is an exhibition at the New Wing Sunway Pyramid. It costs min of RM5k per piece. :)
