Singapore Minister Mentor, Mr Lee Kuan Yew said "Retirement means death. If you ask me, for me, retirement would have meant death," What is your views???
It was reported in the Star recently that Malaysian men find life as retirees boring, while women are more likely to experience problems in their marriage and personal relationships post-retirement.
This was among the findings of the AXA Affin Life Insurance Bhd Retirement Scope Survey 2008 in which Malaysia participated for the first time.
Men were more likely to have difficulty creating or maintaining social networks out of the work place, the survey found, attributing this to men being less prepared to adapt to a more sedate pace of life when work and career were no longer a large part of their lives.
However, women felt trepidation for their marriage or relationships, although they were more secure financially.
According to the survey findings, women consider themselves better prepared psychologically for retirement, and thus are less likely to fall into boredom.
In Malaysia, 313 respondents aged 25 and above representing the working group participated in the survey, while there were 319 retirees aged 75 and below.
The survey was carried out in 26 countries.
Health-wise, about 50% of working male participants anticipated problems upon retirement, against only 17% females feeling that way.
I supposed this one very much depend on each individual's financial & planning b4 going for early retirement.
ReplyDeleteIf one is affordable, he/she can go traveling one country after one country (when retired) to experience the different beauty & their culture too. Myself won't feel this boring but again financial is the issue!
Dora:)
I haven't reach that retirement stage yet. Still has many more years to come. If really retire, I ajak you go fishing ya, apa maciam? hehehehe
ReplyDeletesam, i just read about this the other day! i think retirement allows you to do yr hobbies & practice yr interest. like for instance, if you are a religious person, you can help out in the church or temple and expand yr networking.
ReplyDeleteIf i were to retire, i am gonna be a full-time blogger. In between i would love to design & make some clothes for my friends & families. And I can bake cakes & cook lovely dishes for my family. I just cant wait for retirement!
My dad is retired and I'm glad he is keeping himself busy with the grandchildren, going into town meeting friends and buying daily supplies, if necessary, and planting padi. He was also the head of the village council for a while. One thing to watch when you're retired is your diet and exervise, if not you'll expried quickly. When I tell people here(U.S)that my dad retired at 56 they raise their eyebrows. People normally retire around 65 yo here but live longer than Malaysians.

ReplyDeleteTo live a happy retirement life, it certainly need good planning. Everyone needs are different and we may have a good plan but there a still a lots of factors that can have an impact on it.
If you are financial well off, you are definitely better off. They are many others considerations like a nice family, friends and networking.
What Jean mentioned on religious, I agreed on it as religion will guide us to live a happy and meaningful life. :)
I am retiring in a few months time. I can't wait any longer but I have no choice but to serve my terms. Why do I look forward in retirement?
ReplyDeleteI never like working life. I never enjoyed it. I just do it to sustain a living. In the past 30 years I have been living a balanced life, work, do social work at the surau, took up serious hobby like photography and play a lot with my grand children. I never have enough time to do all these. Whenever possible, i leave office early to persue my non office activities. When I retire, i will have all my time to indulge in photography, help out at the surau and play with my grand children. I cannot imagine people find retirement boring. How do they spent their free time all these while? These people must have no life in the past but work....work....and work. What a pity?
Ahmad ab Hamid: Thanks for sharing here your plan for retirement soon.
ReplyDeleteI believe everyone must have a plan for whatever they do throughout their life. With joyful effort and a good plan, we can live a meaningful and happy retirement life. :)
